Real-life[]
Woodpeckers are a family of birds that also includes piculets, wrynecks and sapsuckers. They are found worldwide except in Oceania and Madagascar and most of them live in forests and woodlands, although some live in rocky hillsides and even deserts. There close relatives include jacamars, puffbirds, barbets, honeyguides and, surprisingly, toucans, and the family itself has about 200 species. The Ivory-billed woodpecker and the Imperial woodpecker are both thought to be extinct (although they may still exist).
